The Lagos State government kicked off the year 2024 world clean up day exercise in Oshodi-Isolo local government on Thursday with clean up of Bada and Peluola communities, market places and motorparks.
The world clean up day is celebrated every 20th of September of the year with the sole aim of ensuring a cleaner environment.
The state government held the exercise with an awareness campaign for hygiene environment.
Kicking off the sensitisation campaign in Oshodi on Thursday, the Special Adviser on Environment and Water Resources to the Lagos State governor, Mr Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu said the exercise becomes very germane as it will further support the state government’s effort in ensuring cleaner environment across board.
Rotimi-Akodu said the day signifies the importance of a cleaner environment to a healthy living urging residents to continue to keep their environment clean at all times.
The special adviser on environment and water resources assures the market men and women of government support in making sure PSP operators and other persons involved in ensuring cleaner environment is achieved in Oshodi as he urged them to cultivate within themselves and in their various markets cleaner environment.
Speaking on the closure of the Idera market in Mafoluku, the special adviser said the Lagos State Environmental Corps carried out the a took as a result of noncompliance to hygienic standards set by the state government.
He said the market leaders and PSP operators whom were accused of not picking the wastes on a weekly basis will hold a stakeholders meeting to find lasting solution to the problem in the area.
The Oshodi-Isolo local government chairman, Otunba Kehinde Almaroof Oloyede represented on the occasion by the vice chairman, Mrs Islamiyah Modupeola Badmus-Aregbe thanked the state government for choose Oshodi as she reiterated the efforts the council is making in ensuring a cleaner environment.
Badmus-Aregbe told the state government that the local government has been making efforts in sensitising and educating residents on the need to keep their environment clean.
She assured that the local government will continue to do it’s best always in making sure every aspect of the council is cleaner thereby leading to a healthy lifestyle within the council.
When it got to her noticed, the closure of Idera market by the men of the Lagos State Environmental Corps, the council helmsman pleaded for leniency for the reopening of the market with assurance that the market leaders will be made to ensure cleaner environment within and outside their market areas.
The council boss emphasised the importance of cleaning the environment to a healthy living and promised to ensure this happens within the council.
The clean up exercise started as early as 7am with the cleaning up of Bada and Peluola communities in the Mafoluku area of the council followed by markets and motorparks within the Oshodi-Isolo local government.
It was rounded up at the newly constructed Liverpool road with general sensitisation campaign.
