Fathia Ugbedeojo Hassan, a junior secondary school 3 student of MIMS Comprehensive College (MCC), has won the first position in the second edition of the SPELLDEMIC Spelling Bee/Spoken Words competition which was held at the Afe Babalola Auditorium, University of Lagos (UNILAG) on Saturday.
In the keenly contested spelling Bee competition, Fathia defeated over 120 students from several other secondary schools that participated in the competition to clinch the junior category’s first prize position.
Fathia despite all the hurdles in the competition, scale through at the end through dint of hard work.
She emerged as the winner after qualifying in the first leg of the competition last year. Despite the tough rounds of oral and written tests conducted by the judges to sway the spellers, she proved to know her onions all through the competition.
When she emerged winner, excitement, and joy greeted the air as congratulations poured in from different school representatives who graced the occasion.
Fathia and the school’s effort were highly commended for the feat.
One of the schools’ representatives Mr. Seun Olakunle said; “the first day I saw this girl at the first level of the competition, I was amazed. I knew she had prepared very well to have been able to perform so excellently. I told my students to emulate her.”
Another school representative recommended her for other competitions and advised her not to rest on her oars.
MIMS Comprehensive College (MCC) was also presented the certificate for the Most Supportive School in recognition of her distinguished conduct and forthrightness during the course of the competition.
Other students who did the school proud at the event include Saeed-Salman Labeebah, Titilope Hamnah, Mikail-Bello Aisha, Abdulkareem Rofiat and Adelopo Mariam.
The SPELLDEMIC 2.0 Spelling Bee/ Spoken words Contest Chief Executive Mr. Aderounmu Enoch congratulated all the scholars that made it to the grand finale especially Fathia Hassan for clinching the first position of the competition.
She was presented a gold trophy with cash to appreciate her feat.
An elated Fathia thanked the school’s management board and her school coach, Miss Adebisi Adeniji for given her the platform to participate in the competition and for the effective coaching from her coach.
She said; “I am grateful to my school for this feat and also my amiable coach for the tutelage all through the competition stages leading to the final stage and my eventual winning of the competition. I will never relent on this feat, it is a challenge that I must sustain in the years to come. “
