… Deplores Anti-Open defecation squads
In efforts geared towards eradication of open defecation, the Lagos state has said more public toilets will be built in strategic public places to end the menace of open defecation.
The state government also said that anti-open defecation squad has been set up and stationed in strategic public places to fight against open defecation.
This was disclosed on Wednesday by the Special adviser to Lagos state governor on environment and water resources, Mr Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu on a radio programme on Eko FM monitored by The Bliss News.
The Special Adviser said the government is not relenting in its efforts at ensuring cleaner and greener environment for the benefit of Lagosians as he urged them to always maintain a cleaner environment.
He said; “We have perfected plans to build more public toilets in the state to end open defecation. We have also established anti-open defecation monitoring and enforcing squad. We have deplored them to public places to curb open defecation.
“We found out that those who mostly defecate in the open spaces are strangers who just came to Lagos and squatters, all these we are working on to prevent and we will see to its successful logical end.”
Rotimi-Akodu said the government is carrying out advocacy programmes in all public places, local governments and local council development areas to ensure end to open defecation and indiscriminate dump of refuse in the water channels.
“We are on advocacy programme to educate the citizens on environmental laws and the consequences for disobeying the laws. We are going to markets, motor parks and other public places to advocate against open defecation, environmental degradation and indiscriminate dumping of refuses on waste channels.
“We found out that most markets default environment laws. We have given the markets check list on how to keep the markets clean, anytime these are not maintained, we always evoke the law by locking up such markets.”
He said environmental law offenders are made to face the law through prosecution in the law court and promised that the state will not relent in its efforts to guarantee cleaner and safer environment.
