The senator representing Lagos West Senatorial District at the national assembly, Dr Idiat Oluranti Adebule has task Monarchs on ensuring adequate security in their domains.
Adebule who hosted the monarchs in her senatorial district to a day training on security management and community security charged the royal fathers who were there in their numbers to ensure continued adequate security at all times in their kingdoms.
The senator speaking on background of the Yuletide season which is usually associated with various activities, said it becomes imperative to sensitise the royal fathers to play a key role at ensuring security during and after the Yuletide season.
She said their royal majesties as custodians of the customs and traditions of the people also have great roles to play in ensuring security in the country, saying only with a peaceful and secured environment that there would be meaningful development.
She said: “The traditional rulers are the custodians of our culture and customs, they are the people at the grassroots they are the people their palaces are the closest to the people, so if you are talking of security, you must not only talk of only the kinetic aspect of it, you must also look at it from all aspect which the traditional rulers are taking care of. On our part this time, considering the Yuletide period, we thought it is the ideal time for us to bring them together in forging a synergy on how to better secure their domains and that is why we brought in the commissioner of police who was represented by his deputy to discuss strategies to further ensure peace and security within their communities.”
Speaking at the training, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Panti Lagos, DCP Ahmed Lateef said the roles of monarchs can not be overemphasized at this time where community policing is becoming the order of the day.
Lateef who represented the state commissioner of police, CP Ishola Olarewaju Olawale, disclosed that every royal father is a potential member of the police community relations committee, this he said gives them the opportunity to make sure they maintain peace and order in their various domains.
The police deputy commissioner said the royal fathers can among other things report adequate dangerous trends in their community to the police authority for immediate action.
He told them the law allows them to arrest a criminal and call the police immediately for taking over of the case, this he said it becomes necessary to ensure criminals are apprehended.
“One thing we must know is the fact that the police can not police everywhere without the support of the community, we believe so much in community engagement and that is why engaged the royal fathers that if they see something in their domains they should say something,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the royal fathers, the Elewu of Ewu Kingdom, Oba Shakiru Kuti thanked the senator for the training on security management and assured that they would further man their territories adequately against any form of unrest.
